Practical Movement Skills

Wednesdays 09:15-10:00 GMT

45 minutes of ground movement, get ups & focusing on a key skill each week. Learn good technique to apply to practical movements in daily life (including balancing, squatting, lifting, moving over and under objects and more).

Reminding ourselves of healthy movement patterns not only helps us increase our ability to perform daily movements more safely, but also reminds us of the ways we need to use our bodies to remain strong, mobile and capable of all the activities we want to enjoy in our lives.

Any additional equipment needed (mainly household items) will be in the class description.

Midweek Movement

Wednesdays 13:00-13:30 GMT

This 30 minute class is a shorter version of the PMS class, that focusses more on foundational movements to increase mobility in joints, particularly in the lower half of the body, with gentle body-weight bearing movements to increase strength in the upper body and standing work to improve balance.

Moving in these ways improves other upright movements and coaches you in many essential movement patterns that are often missing in daily life.

Perfect if you're sat at a desk for long periods and want to fit in some healthy movements during your lunch break!

Ability level & class participation

Both classes are aimed at those who can get up and down from the ground, but who may be struggling to do so and would like to find more ease in their movements.

As this is a group online class, it is not possible to give personal instruction, so please expect to participate to your own personal level of ability. I offer regressions and progressions for most movements, so adjusting the movements for your body is key. Please remember that just moving in these natural ways, at whatever level you can, is hugely beneficial and over time your body will become more able to perform certain movements as your movement confidence grows.

Equipment, Space & Clothing

For all classes you will need space of about 6ft x 6ft on a forgiving surface such as carpet or a rug and clothing that allows unrestricted movement.

Useful equipment to have to hand for all classes is a foam half dome or a rolled up towel as an alternative. It's also a good idea to have a heavy hardback book you can stand on or for use as a counterbalance. I always advise having bolsters in the form of a cushion or folded blanket and perhaps a chair or furniture nearby to lean on if feel you may need them.

For the 'Practical Movement Skills' classes additional equipment may be required. Items can include something heavy to lift like a backpack including as many books as you want, something to balance along, like a simple 2'x4' beam from a builders' merchant (£5 & a great investment to get you balancing more!) or even just the edge of a yoga mat for feedback, a hardback book to use for counterbalancing, a brush handle & chair.

Extra equipment needed will be will be in the class description.
