The hidden gaps in your movement (and how to close them)
I often get asked, “What’s the best exercise for my balance? How do I get my heels down in a deep squat? Or what’s the best way to get up off the floor?”
And honestly, I struggle to answer briefly, because to move well in one way, you need to be moving well in all the ways.
But don’t let that answer put you off. I know you’ve been sold the “5 moves to fix your back pain” type of message for years. It’s tempting, isn’t it? These messages caught me hook, line and sinker when I was in pain, but now I realise they were creating false hope. They would say do these, tick them off, job done. For a while, maybe you do feel a bit better, but then the problem comes creeping back, you start forgetting the exercises and before you know it, you’re beating yourself up for not keeping them up, so you stop trying. Down the spiral you go.
It’s not your fault. The problem isn’t you. It’s the narrow way we’ve been taught to think about movement.
What’s missing? (Finding your movement gaps)
You are probably moving a lot in your life, perhaps walking, exercising, gardening, generally being active, but you still feel stiff when crouching, awkward getting down to the floor, or hesitant when balancing.
If you’ve ever wondered why everyday things like feeling stable when you reach for the top shelf or crouching to a low cupboard feel harder than they should? It’s a sign you’ve got a movement gap in your repertoire.
Movement gaps are the parts of life where your body isn’t getting the variety and sometimes quantity it needs. You might feel strong during your pilates class, but rarely move at floor level the rest of the time. Or you might find you need to keep stretching daily, because your body’s movement needs aren’t being addressed in daily life. Or you might wonder why you feel uncertain getting across a wobbly bridge, but you rarely challenge your balance in real-life ways.
And those gaps? They add up. They explain why being “active” doesn’t always translate into ease and confidence in daily life.
Everything is connected
What a lot of programmes miss is the fact that you can’t just practise one thing, feel like you’re mastering it, and expect it to translate across all the ways you need to move in reality.
For example, we’d all like better balance, wouldn’t we? But it’s not only about standing on one leg. Balance depends on the strength you build getting up and down from the floor, the mobility in your hips and ankles, and the stability you develop when shifting your weight in different positions.
Let’s say you want to get up off the floor more easily? It’s not just about doing “get-ups.” You also need to spend time sitting in a variety of floor positions, with smooth transitions between them to build the mobility to become better at getting off the floor, as well as building the strength through your whole body to push yourself back up, by practising getting up in a variety of different ways.
Everything is connected.
And yes, that might sound like a lot, but please don’t be overwhelmed. The best way to create lasting change is to start small, build consistently, and trust that the cumulative effects will show up over time. You just need to know how.
What makes my approach different
And this is where people often ask me: “So what makes your approach different from a normal fitness class or online programme?”
Instead of forcing “the 5 magic moves” into your day and then feeling guilty when they slip away, you learn to create a rhythm of movement that fits your body and your life, so it’s easier to be consistent and you can start to see that this persistence, woven into the way you live already, will keep paying off long-term.
I use 6 key principles of M.O.V.I.N.G (using my framework; the Move Well Wheel™ from my upcoming book - available to pre-order now). I then help you apply the gaps in these areas of movement using my Everyday Ease Method™.
It’s not about chasing workouts. It’s about weaving small, practical shifts into the life you already live.
The confidence factor
The real result isn’t just more mobility or strength. It’s confidence - rebuilding trust in your body again.
When you know you can balance with ease, hesitation disappears. When you feel comfortable getting down and up, you find you’re not worrying so much about what might happen if you fall. When lifting or carrying feels secure, daily life stops being a risk and starts feeling like freedom again. Opportunities for improvement present themselves everywhere.
That’s why I created my signature course; Reclaim Everyday Ease.
If you think you’re ready - then you need to act fast!
The doors are open this week only!
I plan to run the course again at some point next year, and the waiting list will open up again for the next cohort once this course has started, but if this feels like it’s right for you, then I can’t wait to welcome you onto the course.
Inside, you’ll get:
Weekly live coaching sessions (with replays if you can’t make it live).
Bite-sized video lessons that fit into your day.
Practical prompts that show you how to turn movement into habit.
A supportive community for encouragement and sharing wins.
A guest expert session.
Q&A time to get the feedback you need
Each week builds on the last, from floor comfort to upright balance, from ground based mobility to everyday strength. By the end, you’ll have a plan designed around your body, your lifestyle, and your goals and you’ll be surrounded by like-minded people who are all on the same journey.
In the course we’ll uncover your movement gaps, step by step, week by week, until those gaps are filled and you start to feel more capable and confident again.
Making movement matter in everyday life
Movement doesn’t have to be another chore on your to-do list. It can be the thing that makes you feel strong, confident and free in your everyday life.
The first step? Spotting and closing your movement gaps.
